Is WordPad Right For You?

WordPad has been an essential feature of Microsoft Windows for nearly 29 years and provides users with a basic word processor capable of formatting text according to different font styles and sizes, bolding/italicizing the font, aligning paragraphs and creating bulleted/numbered lists.

Microsoft made this announcement via Windows 11 Canary build released Friday and confirmed they would no longer update the application.

Basic editing and formatting

WordPad is an effective program for quickly creating simple text documents requiring basic formatting and editing features, but for more advanced document creation and editing needs users may require advanced or specialized word processing software.

WordPad makes creating new documents easy: simply click or tap on any blank area within its main window, start typing, and a vertical flashing line called the cursor will show where each character you type will appear on screen.

Once your document is complete, save it by clicking or tapping “File,” selecting “Save,” and providing a file name. Alternatively, print your document by accessing the Print menu and choosing your printer.

WordPad provides numerous formatting features to enhance the appearance of your document, such as font styles, adjusting text size, bolding/italicizing formats, align texts with images and more.

WordPad provides the capability of increasing or decreasing text indentations using the paragraph section of its Home tab, helping to ensure a clean and professional-looking document. Furthermore, its Find and Replace menu allows you to search and replace text within documents; and finally WordPad comes equipped with its own word count feature so that you can keep tabs on how many words have been included in them.


As any professional writer knows, spelling-checking is integral to producing error-free documents. Not only can it save time by quickly locating spelling mistakes, but also provide corrections for grammar errors. Spell-checking helps ensure documents adhere to specific formatting and style guidelines or standards as well.

Spell checking functionality is available for most programs that support text editing. If your program doesn’t already include it, an add-on or online service might offer this function; many email programs such as Gmail and Yahoo Mail offer built-in spell checks as well.

WordPad automatically detects misspelled words with a red underline. Right-clicking them displays suggestions for correction. In addition, WordPad can also be set to automatically check spelling and grammar as you type.

Optionally, Linux BSD macOS and other Unix-like operating systems allow you to use the aspell program for checking spelling in a text file. This utility reduces words to their skeletal form before applying pattern matching algorithms to detect spelling errors. Aspell also offers suggested replacement words when incorrect words occur – when selected one of these replacements, Aspell will replace the word with its suggested replacement in your text file and highlight any incorrectly-spelled ones with their suggested replacements; you can set aspell to always provide suggestions or just correct those you have marked as incorrect.


WordPad may not offer all the advanced editing and formatting capabilities of Office 365’s dedicated word processor, but it still offers basic editing and formatting features for users. WordPad can be used for writing letters or notes as well as creating lists and outlining, adding pictures, custom drawings or inserting other objects – plus it has a WYSIWYG system so you can see exactly how the text will appear before printing!

WordPad can change font style, size and color as well as apply formatting such as bold and italics. Additionally, WordPad enables users to create bullet lists, align paragraphs and adjust line spacing in documents – typically saving files using Rich Text Format (.rtf), though it also reads Microsoft Word documents and plain text files (.txt).

WordPad’s ribbon menu, known as Home, includes several customization options that are organized according to purpose, such as Clipboard, Font and Paragraph. You can select how and where to print your document as well as register up to eight printer drivers here. Secondly, under View there is another series of options regarding the elements displayed within its window that allow users to toggle shows or hide rulers/status bars as well as customize Measurement units.


WordPad doesn’t offer advanced collaboration features like real-time co-authoring or track changes; for collaborative writing and editing, more sophisticated word processing programs such as Microsoft Word on desktop computers running Windows operating systems offer these features, enabling synchronous or asynchronous collaboration on documents like business reports or market trends analyses with other users synchronously or asynchronously.
