ABBYY FineReader

ABBYY FineReader

ABBYY FineReader is an all-inclusive PDF solution, featuring OCR (Optical Character Recognition), document conversion and document comparison features such as side-by-side document comparisons, forms processing and redacting functionality.

NYU Bobst Library members can purchase this program at a customized price, for use on both Mac and Windows computers, supporting multilingual documents.

Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

OCR technology allows users to convert paper documents, scanned images and PDFs into editable digital text which can then be stored as Word or Excel documents, HTML files or any other desired text format.

FineReader uses an advanced algorithm to recognize the logical structure of documents and recreate native formatting elements (table of contents, footers, headers and fonts) so that its final recognition results closely resemble their original document. This enables accurate transition of digital texts across formats.

FineReader goes far beyond standard document conversion settings to offer additional advanced features that enable you to tailor its output exactly to your requirements. For instance, use OCR Editor to correct mistakes made during OCR scanning or add new characters and ligatures to its list of recognized symbols. Moreover, use training to develop user patterns for certain text that include special characters or fonts – this feature is particularly beneficial when processing documents that contain unfamiliar fonts.

NYU Bobst Library members can gain access to ABBYY FineReader by making an appointment to use the software. Businesses may opt for per-seat, remote user or concurrent licensing options while individuals may make one-time payments for this option – the software can be found on workstations in room 617 of the Bobst Library.

Converting Documents

The software allows users to convert any file – one or multiple at the same time – into PDF or other document formats, while still maintaining their original formatting. Furthermore, it can recognize text blocks within scanned images or imported PDFs for high-quality output.

With ABBYY FineReader, you can digitize paper documents or files of various formats into searchable PDFs for use in Microsoft Word and other applications. Plus, ABBYY FineReader’s OCR engine recognizes over 200 natural, artificial, and programming languages to provide access to all file-based content.

Archiving, retrieving, editing, protecting and sharing files within a digital workplace have never been simpler with PDF/A-1 to PDF/A-3 archive files and PDF/UA access documents for assistive technologies like screen readers. You can even easily combine pages into one PDF file by extracting text to make editing simpler. With PDF/UA support you can ensure documents can be accessed by assistive technologies like screen readers.

An Hot Folder task allows you to automatically process all incoming files you receive and transform them into searchable and editable PDFs, so they can be reviewed whenever convenient – you no longer have to wait for someone else to give you paperwork! Customize this process further by adjusting image quality settings, threshold threshold settings or other aspects that improve recognition accuracy.

Text Editing

ABBYY FineReader allows for text editing in multiple formats. Its text editor can reflow paragraphs and table cells for improved reading, while other tools and buttons enable users to format texts by adding margins, adjusting font size or altering color settings.

Apart from its text editing features, this software also comes equipped with various other functions to assist with scanning and document processing tasks. It can recognize images and convert them into searchable PDF documents while also extracting text from non-searchable PDFs into popular office formats such as.docx,.pptx and.txt for processing purposes. Furthermore, the program supports multilingual documents recognizing nearly 100 languages simultaneously.

Whoever needs to manage large numbers of paper documents frequently will find ABBYY FineReader invaluable, as one of the most accurate OCR programs available it can quickly turn physical paper documents into searchable computer documents in just moments. Furthermore, its automation functions allow routine tasks that would otherwise need to be completed manually to become automated processes.
