When some kids stay home from school,
they play video games, surf the Internet or watch a favorite TV show.
Others may just go grocery shopping with their parents.
Yes,
trips to the super market have suddenly become more interesting to
children since Stop & Shop has implemented Scan It!, a hand-held
device that allows customers to scan and bag their items as they shop.
The
technology, which was introduced to Norwalk's Main Avenue Stop &
Shop last month, expedites the grocery-shopping process while making it
more fun for kids, too.
"It's like a gun. It's really cool
scanning things it's like playing a video game," said James Muldowney,
10, who wasn't feeling well enough to attend Tracey Elementary School
on Tuesday, but mustered enough energy to help his mom at the Main
Avenue Stop & Shop.
While Muldowney's mother, Jan, enjoys
the speed in which she's now able to load up her cart, she feels the
technology is perfect for children to gain a better understanding of
the shopping process and the cost of items.
"It makes it more
interesting for the kids," Jan Muldowney said. "It makes it more
interactive for them. They take little bit more of an interest than
just walking around when I shop."
Interest from all ages
has rapidly increased since Scan It! was initially launched by Modiv
Media in June 2007 at a Stop & Shop in Norwood, Mass. Since then,
the Motorola device has been placed in approximately 145 other
locations.
